Bodies in Motion in the Attic Tragedy: Normativity, Rhetoric, Gender

The (verbal) representations of bodily movements in ancient Greek tragedy depend on explicit and implicit scenic, religious, social, and gender norms. However, tragedians reveal a critical attitude towards mythical and ritual tradition, contemporary political discourse, and gendered rules: transgressions of ritual, social, and gender standards of movement seem to be intrinsic to the ancient drama. By rereading Sophocles’ Theban plays (Antigone, Oedipus the King and Oedipus at Colonus), my project analyses both the mobility and the specific bodily movements of the plays’ characters and their relation to gender, religious and political normativity.
